Industry News /Comments

It took just three weeks to reach this milestone.

At the start of June, Ford confirmed that as of May 26, there had been 70,000 reservations for the newFord F-150 Lightning. At the time, we estimated that it was possible that the groundbreaking electric truck could havesurpassed 80,000 reservationsat the rate it was going. Well, according to a new report by The New York Times, the F-150 Lightning's momentum isn't slowing down. In fact, orders for theTesla Cybertruckrival have reached the milestone 100,000 mark. This news follows arecent pollthat indicated that consumers have an equally strong interest in both the Cybertruck and the F-150 Lightning.

Those 100,000 F-150 Lightning orders took just three weeks to amass since the vehicle was revealed on May 20. Of course, these are just pre-orders and many customers could change their minds at a later stage but the numbers certainly indicate that the Lightning won't have trouble finding homes. While Tesla amassed 250,000 pre-orders for the Cybertruck in a shorter time frame, Lightning customers can at least see the truck they'd potentially be buying while the production Cybertruck hasyet to be shown. The 100k milestone comes in the midst of a busy and successful period for Ford. The company reported a $3.3-billion profit in Q1 of 2021, more than it has made in any other quarter since 2011.

Of course, the brand also just revealed thenew Ford Maverick. It will slot in below the Ranger and, with a starting price of under $20,000 and an efficient hybrid powertrain, it's yet another likely big seller for the Blue Oval. An electric version of the Ford Explorer is also on the way and together with models like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, around 40 percent of all Fords will be EVs by the time 2030 rolls around. If the initial reception to the F-150 Lightning is an accurate predictor of things to come, Ford should have little trouble meeting that target.
