First Honda Civic Type R In The US Is Selling For Porsche 911 GT3 Money

Auctions /4 Comments

We knew this car was going to be a hot seller, just not six figures hot.

With less than a week left to bid, the first Honda Civic Type R to make landfall within US borders seems slated to be shipped off to the garage of a well-heeled good samaritan.Just days after heading to the auction block, set to be sold off for charity, the Nurburgring record holder with astarting price in the mid $30k rangehas been spotted by someone who's obviously intent on being the first Type R owner in America. Are they a mega fan or just a charitable rich person? We'd like to think it's a little bit of both.

Honda donated the first Type R, commemorated with a placard that sits beneath the six-speed manual shifter, to thePediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.Bring a Traileris mediating the auction and 100% of the proceeds will be going to the foundation, which will use it to fund medical research on one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer and funnel the change into family support programs. There likely hasn't been a better reason to pick up a 306 horsepower Honda that redefines the parameters of how much fun can be had in a front-wheel drive race car. It was obvious from the start that the bid would soar to heights greater than the Type R's base price, but to go as high as it has within the first few days of the auction is surprising.

So how much did this anonymous donor put down? Not a penny less than $200,000. Yikes. Practicality obviously wasn't on the donor's mind because that kind of money can buy better Nurburgring-tackling alternatives like the Porsche 911 GT3 with enough cash left over for another well spec'd Type R and maybe a Corolla for good measure. As much as we love supercars, we also can appreciate this mantra of being happy content with less of a car and seeing the rest go to those who need it most.
