And it has other uses, too.

Ferrari is taking noise insulation to a new level with its patented anti-fart technology.CarBuzzdiscovered the patent application filed with theUnited States Patent and Trademark Office.

Obviously, a prestigious brand like Ferrari won't call it the Anti Cutting The Cheese Intervention or Autonomous Toot Intervention, but we see right through this patent for so-called "Active Road Noise Cancellation."Active noise cancellationis not a new technology, but Ferrari is taking it to a new level by incorporating listening devices and loudspeakers into the seats.

According to the patent, it was designed specifically for a vehicle with a front-mounted engine and a passenger compartment with two or more seats. There's only one model that fits the latter part of that description, and it's the V12-poweredFerrari Purosangue.

As you can see in the patent images below, there are microphones embedded in the headrests. They're specifically mounted near a person's ears so the car hears what its occupants are exposed to, be it the cry of angry peasants or the sound of somebody letting one loose.

The other important parts of this invention are the boxes labeled 8 and 9. Nine is a sound-generating device that can create multiple sonances to cancel out any unwanted interior noises. Eight is an amplifier that feeds whatever noise the sound-generating device comes up with to the loudspeakers.

Essentially, the headrest-mounted headphones will hear a fart, and the sound-generating device will transmit a sound to cancel it out. All you have to do to keep the heat off yourself is use the time-honored excuse of "he who smelt it dealt it."

In all seriousness, the speakers in this patent are mounted low down because that's where road noise comes from. Low noise, vibration, and harshness levels are to be expected when you drop $400,000 on a luxury performance SUV.

The Purosangue is one of the most aerodynamic SUVs in existence, so wind noise (not passing wind) isn't a problem. However, it is equipped with staggered 22-/23-inch wheels front and rear, and the tires have a shallow profile. There are also aftermarket kits thatincrease the wheel size to 24 inches.

These kinds of wheels tend to make a lot of noise, coming directly from the lower body (of the car, that is). That's why the loudspeakers are actually mounted that low. It's nice to know that Ferrari is working toward making its cars more comfortable while working on new patents to make themeven faster in the hands of noobs.
