The latest Fast and Furious film has had the biggest worldwide opening ever, beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

If you needed proof that the Fast and Furious franchise is showing no signs of slowing down, this is it.The Fate of the Furious, the eighth, yes, eighth, film in the long-running series, has only been out for a few days, and it's already breaking box office records. Originallyprojected to make between $375 and $440 million,Box Office Mojoreports that the worldwide taking for The Fate of the Furious has clocked in at $532.5 million in its opening weekend, making it the biggest worldwide movie launch ever.

This means it's overtaken the previous $529 million opening record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As predicted, it didn't perform so well domestically, however. Estimates suggest that The Fate of the Furious made $100.2 million during its US opening, falling short of previous estimates that it would make $110-120 million. This was still enough to secure it the number one spot at the domestic box office, but not enough to surpass its predecessor Furious 7, which made an insane $147 million domestically during its first three days. Universal's push to get The Fate of the Furious into as many cinemas as possible worldwide is clearly paying off.

As part of the studio's intense international distribution, the movie premiered in 20,000 locations across 63 countries, where it debuted at number one in every territory. Unsurprisingly, China took the highest earning with an estimated $190 million, making it the largest three-day opening in the country. The staggering success of The Fate of the Furious in its opening weekend has steered the franchise past the $4.5 billion mark in earnings from all eight films. Need we remind you that this franchise started as a humble street racing movie that ripped off Point Break. Now it's become one of the most bankable blockbuster behemoths in movie history - and Fast and Furious 9 and 10 are still to come.
