Elon Musks Says The Tesla Cybertruck Can Float

Electric Vehicles /14 Comments

It was inspired by James Bond's Lotus Esprit submarine after all.

The wedge-shaped design of theTesla Cybertruckhas been divisive, to say the least. Despite the backlash, Tesla has already secured over 600,000 reservations for the electric pickup at the time of writing. Design changes are inevitable, however, since the Cybertruck shown last year was a concept.

Elon Musk has confirmed the production version will besmaller than the concept. But it turns out the Cybertruck's design will offer an advantage you may not have considered: it can float in water. Responding to a fan on Twitter who asked about the Cybertruck's wading depth, Elon Musk confirmed the Cybertruck "will even float for a while."

This perhaps isn't surprising considering the Cybertruck's radical styling was inspired by theLotus Esprit submarinemovie prop used in the James Bond movie 'The Spy Who Loved Me'Musk bought for $1 millionback in 2013. Owners have also already discovered the Tesla Model Scan float in waterif required.

不过,让知道that the Cybertruck can wade through deep water without causing damage to the truck. As the Twitter user pointed out to Musk, this could be a useful feature for owners who often use their trucks to cross streams while hunting and fishing.

Although, just the same, there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to control this floating EV pickup once it starts floating. Which, to state the obvious, could be a problem.

In addition, Musk confirmed the Cybertruck will come with a heat pump like the Model Y. His excitement and passion for the Cybertruck is clear to see: "Aargh, I'm dying to make Cybertruck like yesterday!!" he wrote on Twitter.

Unfortunately, we still have a long time to wait before the production version arrives. The Tri Motor Tesla Cybertruck, which has a triple-motor setup delivering 500 miles of range and starts at $69,900, will enter production in late 2021, followed by the $39,900 base version in late 2022, which features a RWD single-motor setup providing 250 miles of range.
