Industry News /5 Comments

The relative claim frequency of the Charger is astronomically high compared to the industry average.

The Highway Loss Data Institute has published itslatest report of the most-stolen vehicles我n the United States, and the news won't make for promising reading if you own aDodge Charger SRT Hellcator Dodge Charger HEMI.

These models were the most stolen in the country for the 2020-2022 model years, followed by the Infiniti Q50, Dodge Challenger, and Land Rover Range Rover in the top five. In general, vehicle theft claim frequencies have steadily risen since the pandemic. Most stolen models also tend to be large, powerful, and fairly expensive.

Several Kia models also proved to be like catnip for criminals as the brand continues to battle a viral trend that identifies how easy they are to steal. The Sportage, Rio, and Forte all landed in the top 20 most-stolen list. But overall, the number of Charger SRT Hellcat theft claims stood out by far.

Over the evaluated period, theft claims for the powerful Dodge sedan were over 60 times higher than the average for all other 2020 to 2022 models, relative to the number of Charger SRT Hellcats on the road. For the Charger HEMI, theft claims were 20 times higher than the average. The relative claim frequency (with 100 being the average) for the Charger SRT Hellcat was 6,128, followed by 2,197 for the Charger HEMI. The claim frequency of 878 for the third-placed Q50 demonstrates the gap between the two Dodges and the rest of the field.

Although often targeted by criminals, the frequency of claims for these Dodge models has risen markedly - there were 25 whole-vehicle theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicles for 2020-22, up from 18 in 2019-21. Compare that with the most-stolen 2017-19 model, the Infiniti Q60, which had just 2 thefts per 1,000 insured vehicle years, and one can see how risky these Dodge models are.

"If you own a Hellcat, you better check your driveway," said HLDI senior vice president Matt Moore. "These numbers are unbelievable."

Luxury models like the BMW X6 and X7 were also targeted often by thieves, as were several heavy-duty pickups from Ford and Ram. Despite Kia introducing various measures, such assoftware updates to keep thieves at bay, its cars are still being stolen frequently.

Data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) from earlier this year supports some of the HLDI's findings. That agency reported the Honda Accord as America's most stolen model, although我ts data covered a longer timespanand was based on the number of thefts, not the claim frequency. The Accord came in 16th spot in the HLDI's findings, but the actual number of claims was one of the highest.

On the opposite end of the scale, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 had the lowest relative claim frequency of any model. EVs are generally stolen less often than gas cars, with a possible contributing factor being that they're generally parked overnight in areas that are well-lit to charge. The Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, and Tesla Model X are other EVs with some of the lowest relative claim frequencies.Teslas also benefit from Sentry Mode, which can deter thieves by recording the vehicle's surroundings.
