Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Looks Slick Wearing Bentley Wheels

Video /19 Comments

The quirky-looking Chrysler is transformed just by adding some pricey Bentley wheels.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is, perhaps, one of the most hated cars of the 21st century. It came at a time when retro design was all the rage, but Chrysler's attempt was hideous, unlike the successful Mini Cooper and Fiat 500.

We think it'sone of the ugliest cars of all time. First discovered byThe Drive, this Latvia-based example demonstrates that subtle tweaks can transform the unloved American into a weirdly attractive car.

Tucked under the arches are 19-inch wheels borrowed from a first-generationContinental GT. These fully forged wheels look fantastic on the PT Cruiser, providing much-needed aggression and an air of prestige. Being the sportier GT variant, the PT Cruiser has more pronounced side skirts and bumpers, which accent the nine-spoke wheels.

The Bentley alloys have a different bolt pattern to the PT Cruiser, but the owner worked around this by fitting wheel spacers. Apart from the twin hood scoops and roof rack, the Chrysler appears to have been kept stock. It shows what a well-chosen set of wheels can do for a car, even one as aesthetically challenged as this.

As a GT derivative, this PT Cruiser is powered by the same turbocharged four-pot found in thelegendary Dodge Neon SRT-4. The 2.4-liter four-pot motor produces as much as 230 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque, resulting in reasonably energetic performance. The top speed is limited to 124 mph, but we get the feeling this PT Cruiser GT is all about low-speed cruising and looking good.

We're not sure why it works, but it does. It's great to see lackluster cars getting a second chance at being cool - and all it took was a slick-looking set of wheels. We're guessing the owner must have spent a pretty penny on the used Bentley alloys. While trawling the classifieds, we came across a shabby-looking set for $3,200.

This isn't the first modded PT Cruiser we've seen. A few years ago, we came across an example with a tuned motor producing 808 hp,giving it Hellcat-rivaling power. Modifications included a roll cage, racing seats, aero enhancements, and a mighty Garrett GT35R turbocharger.

Now that Chrysler isheading into the electric era, we wouldn't be surprised if the brand tries to resurrect the PT Cruiser. Withsome styling tweaksand a more appealing profile, it could be a unique way for the automaker to reenter the compact vehicle segment.
