Chevy V8 Drag Race: LS-Swapped Audi S4 Vs. 1,040-HP Camaro SS

German engineering vs. American muscle. Which one will come out on top?

Hoonigan has released the latest episode ofThis vs That, the popular drag racing format that pits two highly modified vehicles against each other on a drag strip. This week, Marnell Balmeo is back with his quad-turbocharged '01Audi S4. You may rememberthis car from another recent video, where it went up against a highly modified Ford F-150.

Pop the hood of the German sedan, and you'll be surprised to find a 6.0-liter LS V8 with four turbochargers. That odd-looking bumper accommodates the massive engine, which is said to produce 900 horsepower. Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. That's some serious power, but the competition is equally impressive.

The 2016Camaro SSit's going up against is packing a lot of muscle. The owner, Kyle, swapped out the stock motor for a 6.2-liter LT V8 but has since increased displacement, among other things.

Just for good measure, he also threw in a supercharger and an engine tune for a total of 1,040 hp, butsince this is supercharged, that peak power only arrives at the top of the rev range. To keep the Camaro on the road, the muscle car has been fitted with 325/50 Mickey Thompson rear tires and 15x10 beadlock wheels. "I need as much sidewall as [possible]," said the owner. Interestingly, the diff and axle have been left stock.

So, will the Audi or the Chevy drive off with top honors? Most of the Hoonigan crew believe the Audi will be victorious, partly because of the all-wheel drive system. Both vehicles take off in a blaze of V8 fury, scuttling off the line with hypercar-like urgency. The S4 quickly leaps ahead, leaving the Camaro struggling for traction in the first 1,000-foot race. Ultimately, it's the Audi that clinches the top spot. But the Chevy still has a chance to redeem itself.

To even things out, the second race begins with a rolling start that should benefit the Camaro. This time, the LT-powered Chevy can keep up with other Audi - for about a second. The S4 lunges with incredible speed, reaching the finish line approximately four car lengths ahead of the Camaro.

At this point, the Audi already has it in the bag. But that doesn't stop the team from orchestrating a final "bonus round" race. This time, the Camaro starts two cars ahead of the Audi and gets to leave the line earlier, too. Despite this massive advantage, Balmeo's S4 swoops past the Chevy as if it's standing still and manages to win the final race.

Even though the Audi won by a country mile, the Camaro is still an impressive build that deserves respect. And for the Chevy fans who are disappointed by the results, remember, the Audi won thanks to LS power.
