BMW Just Set Two Blistering Nurburgring Lap Times

Nurburgring /4 Comments

Tourists were banned from the Nurburgring this week as BMW took over.

It's no secret that BMW's M division builds some of the best sports cars around. One of the tools used in the development of such models is the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife, a popular destination for manufacturer development. The Nurburgring, or Green hell as it's known to many, is more than just a development tool, however, as it's also a bragging right when it comes to lap times. BMW knows this, and it's now been attempting lap times with two of its newest, yet-to-be-released models. On April 12, the usual 'touristenfahrten' or 'tourist rides' held daily in-season, were abandoned. The reason is that BMW M rented out the track for practice and marketing activities, during which both theupcoming M3 Touring wagonand theBMW M4 CSLwere spied out on track.

Popular social media personality and Nurburgring taxi driver, Misha Charoudin shared the news to his Facebook page, along with a short clip of the M3 Touring pulling a U-turn on track - typically a dangerous maneuver but one that was possible due to there being no traffic on this occasion.

But the most interesting information shared by Misha was about the lap times set by the two cars. It's no secret that the M3 Touring isgunning for a Nurburgring lap record, which would require it to beat the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon's time of 7:45.19 minutes. According to Charoudin, in the hands of Sport Auto, the M3 wagon managed a 7:30. The M4 CSL was allegedly even quicker, with an estimate of between 7:15 and 7:20 with the same driver.

Importantly, he claims that neither of the cars was going "full send" which means the real lap times could be even quicker.

There were apparently other BMW M cars on track, too, including the new M2 and several others, with many of them being camera cars - no doubt to film footage that will be used when the final lap times are announced.

Both the M3 Touring and M4 CSL will be revealed this year as part of BMW M's 50th-anniversary celebrations. The M3 will be solely available with the 503-horsepower xDrive Competition spec with all-wheel drive and the eight-speed automatic gearbox, while the CSL is expected to have even more power, if possible rear-wheel-drive only, andmuch less weight than any other M4 Coupe. We'll know morewhen the M4 CSL is revealed soon.
