BMW iX Undergoes Final Winter Testing In The Arctic Circle

Progress on the new EV is going well.

BMW's newest electric vehicle is almost here, and whatever you maythink of the stylingof theBMW iX, there's no doubt that this new 'Sports Activity Vehicle' will be an important model for the Bavarian automaker. To ensure that all goes well with a new vehicle, automakers like to test it in the harshest conditions possible, and premium electric crossovers are no different. If anything, the fact that new tech is being employed with EVs, testing becomes all the more important. The latest test for the iX has been in cold weather out beyond the Arctic Circle, and things seem to be going well.

Testing for the iX prototypes has been taking place in Finland's Lapland and the North Cape of Norway's island of Mageroya, with tests of the electric motors, charging technology, batteries, heat management systems, suspensions, and all-wheel-drive being pushed to the limits in sub-zero conditions. With roads being icy and treacherous, BMW's engineers had a great opportunity to test the way the iX handles on slippery surfaces. This includes evaluating "the interaction between drive and suspensions systems on road surfaces with a low friction coefficient." As a result of this rigorous testing, the new iX should be more than capable of handling road conditions in just about any market.

However, it seems that most of the testing done on this new EV will not necessarily yield a direct benefit for future models, as BMW says that future offerings from the brandwill borrow very littlefrom the iX. That said, we don't doubt that certain lessons learned in developing the iX will be vital for the BMWs of tomorrow to be great at what they do. The iX itself should be very exciting too, as BMW says it will offer over 370 miles of range and around 496 horsepower. Combined with its AWD system, this Sports Activity Vehicle should be very sporty indeed.
