BMW Invents Special Door Handles For Future CSL Models

Track day fans rejoice.

宝马公司提起专利申请一个新的循环处理机甲nism housed within an existing door assembly.CarBuzzdiscovered the patent, filed with theGerman Patent and Trademark Office. "Such a loop handle door opener is often associated with the sportiness of a motor vehicle, and loop handle door openers are popular optical tuning aids," the patent states.

In actual racing cars where every gram matters, loops do save weight. But it's telling that Bimmer's most recent lightweight special, theM4 CSL, is equipped with standard door handles. In fact, mosticonic M carshave traditional door handles, not even in the new 3.0 CSL. So what we have here is an "optical tuning aid," which is fancy patent speak for helping your car look hella fast.

There are actual benefits, however. But first, a closer look at the new invention, which uses an existing BMW door handle and can therefore be retrofitted to several cars. Or it could even debut on a future CS or CSL model.

A standard door handle is coupled to a door linkage leading to a tensile force transmission element and a door lock. You don't need all of this in a racing car, so a simple high-strength loop is coupled directly to the tensile force transmission element. Using this method, you save the weight of a fancy door handle and some cabling.

有售后市场循环用于不同cars, but according to BMW, this requires in-depth knowledge of door construction and some mechanical know-how. It's also time-consuming, and you usually end up with something that doesn't quite look right.

That's why BMW is proposing this new loop handle, which slots neatly into the existing door assembly. It consists of the loop and a new tensile force transmission element that will snap lock onto the existing mechanisms. BMW says this can be done without tools, and the standard handle bar is retained.

Basically, you end up with the standard handle equipped to the car and a loop hanging neatly from it. BMW says the visual appearance of the loop will be designed to match the standard equipment so that it won't look out of place. The loop will be fastened by a screw or a rivet, adding to the overall sporty feel. We suspect these loops will be available in various colors, including thefamous BMW M spectrumthat consists of light blue, dark blue, and red.

Of course, the benefits of a loop stretch beyond weight saving and looking good. Track day enthusiasts will know it can be frustrating to open a car door while wearing racing gloves. A loop is also easier to grab and pull if you're on the short side and find yourself drowning in a BMW bucket seat. For reference, see the interior of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS below. It only has a loop for this very reason.

We can see BMW putting this into production, most likely as an optional extra on performance cars like theupcoming M2 CSor as part of the M Performance Parts catalog where it will be sold as an official BMW Motorsport accessory for existing vehicles. BMW specifically mentions retrofitting, leading us to believe that certain door handles already have the space required for this snap-lock feature.

The patent application does not mention a specific part code. Still, we're guessing it will be available to existing M and M Performance models, and the new wave of M models expected to make their debut in the next two years.

If you are a track regular, this would definitely be an accessory worth investing in.
