Audi Just Announced When It'll Debut The All-New A5

Industry News /13 Comments

It's a lot sooner than we first thought.

It may sound hard to believe, but theAudi A5 hasn't received a complete redesignsince its initial debut. That was in 2008. Thanks to a facelift along the way, the A5 has remained competitive in the premium performance coupe and convertible segment. But the all-new,second generation A5 is almost here, and Audi has just announced the date of the big premiere. It'll happen on June 2 in Ingolstadt, Germany. We're sure Audi will make a pretty big deal of it, considering it's chosen its own headquarters for the reveal.

Audi says only the A5 coupe will be shown, and that the convertible (shown here testing at the Nurburgring)will come at a later date, which we're guessing will be the Paris Motor Show in September. Like the new A4, the 2017 A5 is built on the MLB platform, made from aluminum and high-strength steel as well as composite parts. This will help shed weight and, along with updated engines, improve fuel economy. Speaking of engines, the US-spec A5 will be powered by a base 2.0-liter turbo four with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The likely gearbox will be a seven-speed dual-clutch; a manual will no longer be offered. A new A5 Sportback, which isn't sold in the US, is also not far off, as well as the S5 lineup.
