Say hello to Subaru's first electric SUV, that was codeveloped with Toyota.

Compared to other automakers, Subaru is late to the EV party. The Japanese brand doesn't sell a single fully electric model in its current model lineup, but this will soon change with the launch of the Solterra,Subaru's first electric SUV.

Japan's versiondebuted a few days ago, and now the covers have come off the US-spec Solterra at the 2021 LA Auto Show. Revealed alongside itsToyota bZ4X corporate sibling, the Solterra is underpinned by the e-Subaru Global Platform jointly developed by Toyota, which enables all-wheel-drive capability, sharp driving dynamics, and sophisticated safety technology.

Subaru says the Solterra name was created using the Latin words for "Sun" and "Earth" to "represent Subaru's commitment to deliver traditional SUV capabilities in an environmentally responsible package." As standard, the Solterra comes with Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system that utilizes two electric motors, with one on each axle. Combined, this setup generates 215 horsepower and 248-lb-ft of torque.

Official EPA figures are not available yet, but Subaru estimates the Solterra will offer a range of over 220 miles on a single charge. Using DC fast charging, the lithium-ion battery can get a "significant charge," according to Subaru, in less than an hour.

Like other Subaru SUVs, the Solterra is equipped with an enhanced X-Mode AWD mode that optimizes the traction and handling on low-friction terrain, while a new grip control incorporates a hill ascent and descent assist. Combined with 8.3 inches of ground clearance, the Subaru Solterra will tackle rough roads with ease. Visually, the Solterra incorporates a bolder evolution of Subaru's Dynamic x Solid design philosophy, incorporating a hexagonal grille, a low hood, slim and wide LED headlights, and trapezoidal taillights.

短悬臂前后,车顶行李架和wide fenders with plastic cladding contribute to the sporty look. Overall, the Solterra looks strikingly similar to its Toyota bZ4X sibling. In terms of proportions, the Solterra measures 184.6 inches long, 65 inches wide, and 73.2 inches high, with a 112.2-inch wheelbase and with 126 cubic feet of passenger space.

Smartphone convenience features include remote start, smart navigation, and remote lock/unlocking. A panoramic glass roof is also available.

As standard, the Solterra comes with a wealth of driver assists, including automatic pre-collision braking, automatic pre-collision throttle management, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitor with lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. There is also a new standard safety exit alert assist that warns occupants of obstacles and pedestrians when they exit the SUV with audible and visual warnings. For the first time in a Subaru, the Solterra is also available with a 360-degree surround-view camera. Pricing has not been announced, but America's2023 Subaru Solterrawill go on sale in 2022.
