But the Italian automaker doesn't have a good track record in this segment.
According to Alfa Romeo's CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, its upcoming range of EVs will include a brand-new E-segment vehicle that will go head to head with the upcoming BMW i5 andMercedes-Benz EQE Sedan.
"We will have to be in the E-segment in North America," Imparatorevealed toAutomotive News. Imparato previously stated that Alfa Romeo needs a big push to markets outside Europe. He wants to generate 40% of the brand's income from outside Europe by 2030, which is a tough ask considering it only reached 18% in 2021.
Alfa Romeo has to hit various goals in all regions it sells in, including going all-electric in the USA by 2027. That's when this unnamed E-segment will arrive in the USA.
Imparato has previously stated that the brand is not interested in large SUVs. Instead, Alfa's new body shapes would bedictated by aerodynamicsrather than popular body styles. We like this approach because it means more traditional three-box sedans and sport wagons, which Alfa has traditionally been very good at.
The new flagship, which will slot in underthe new halo sports car, will be a crossover. Imparato described this future crossover as competing with the X5, which means it would be a size up from the current Stelvio.
Alfa's first EVs will start arriving in the USA in 2024, while the first dedicated EV will arrive in 2025. By 2027,the entire range will be electric. Alfa is clearly distinguishing between existing models being electrified and new models planned to be electric from the start.
The future likely includes a fully electric version of the Alfa Romeo Tonale and itsmore popular cousin, the Dodge Hornet.
The E-segment is extremely tough to compete in. Most people will opt for the default Germans, but Imparato is setting lofty expectations. He wants an 800-volt architecture and outputs ranging from 350 to 800 horsepower. A 1,000-hp setup will be reserved for Quadrifoglio models. Looking at the current market, we expect the clover leaf models to boast atri-motor setuplike the Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire.
It will be interesting to see whether Alfa Romeo can make an E-Segment car stick. It didn't work out last time the Italian brand tried it. The Alfa Romeo 166 was produced from 1996-2007, and less than 100,000 were made. That's roughly the same timeframe as the belovedE39 BMW 5 Series(1995-2004), of which BMW made 1.5 million.
