25 Years Later, Daytona USA 2 Will Finally Be Playable On Consoles

The classic arcade game can finally be enjoyed on home consoles.

It's a case of better late than never forDaytona USA 2, as the iconic arcade racing game will finally be playable on home consoles, a move that comes 25 years after the game was originally released.VGCreported the exciting news for gamers, having discovered it in the latest issue of a Japanese magazine calledFamitsu. The 1998 game will appear inLike a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, a Yakuza spinoff, under the nameSega Racing Classic 2. This title change was made to avoid any licensing issues. Sega releasedDaytona USA 2as a follow-up toDaytona USA, and it was noted for far better graphics using the Sega Model 3 hardware.

Originally intended to be ported to Sega's Dreamcast, that plan was shelved, and a special version known asDaytona USA 2001was released instead. With its availability on home consoles soon, gamers won't have to rely on emulation alone to enjoy the classic title. The nextLike A Dragonwill also include arcade games likeFighting Vipers 2,Flicky, andGalaxy Force.

Like its predecessor,Daytona USA 2features three courses - Beginner, Advanced, and Expert - with the Expert course covering two laps over a five-mile distance. A big change was the ability to choose a car and corresponding driver, each with various levels of capabilities to match the skills of the players.

Playable vehicles inDaytona USA 2included the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ford Thunderbird, and Pontiac Grand Prix. Even today, racing one of these NASCAR-style stock cars is a blast despite the dramaticadvances in gaming technology. TheDodge Viperalso appears in the game, albeit as an unplayable car, one of the brand's legendary muscle cars alongside theChallenger.

Fans will have to wait until 9 November forDragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Nameto be released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, when it will once again be possible to reliveDaytona USA 2's absorbing gameplay and graphics that have stood the test of time.
