The V12 is being reserved exclusively for the posh Maybach.

If the newMercedes S-Classsomehow isn't luxurious enough for you, the German automaker's Maybach division offers an even more opulent variant. Last year, the2021 Mercedes-Maybach Sdebuted with a seven-inch longer wheelbase than the regular S-Class providing more rear legroom. At the time, only one engine option was available: a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Since no V12 option was announced, there were fears that Mercedes' venerable twelve-cylinder engine was dead. Mercifully, Maybach teased thereturn of the V12-powered S-Classlast month, and now the first photos of the V12-powered S-Class have been revealed.

Like its V8 sibling, the V12 Maybach S features a stylish two-tone finish and copious amounts of chrome, giving it a more premium appearance than the regular S-Class. A logo on the trunk lid indicates the V12-powered S-Class is badged as the "S680." This badge was used for the Chinese version of the Maybach S-Class when it was facelifted in 2017. We also get a close look at the luxury limo's V12 engine, but no technical specifications have been released yet. As a reminder, the 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650 packed a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 rated at 621 horsepower.

There's a good chance the same twelve-cylinder powerplant will carry over to the new model with more power, but it will be reserved exclusively for the posh Maybach.

This will be a welcome boost over the V8 variant, which is rated at 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. For the first time, the V12-powered S-Class will use a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Since it's based on the new S-Class, the interior features five display screens including a 12.8-inch OLED screen, a 12.3-inch driver display, and additional screens for rear passengers.

Expect to pay a price premium for the more potent V12 S-Class. For reference, the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S V8 starts at $184,900 excluding destination charges, so it's probably safe to assume the V12 model will have a starting price of over $200,000. More details should be revealed soon when the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S680 is fully revealed.
