2021 Mercedes S-Class Engine Options Confirmed

Over the last few weeks, Mercedes has been feeding us small morsels of information about the new S-Class, offering alook inside the high-tech cabinand detailing the luxury sedan'srevolutionary safety technology. Now, Mercedes has confirmed the engine options that will be available to US buyers via Motor Trend.

Sitting at the bottom of the range will be the S500 featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. An EQ Boost mild-hybrid system, which is already offered in the redesigned Mercedes E-Class sedan and Cabriolet, among others will add an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the output.

Slotting above the S500 is the S580, powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 codenamed M176 producing 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Like the S500, the powertrain will incorporate a mild-hybrid system adding an extra 20 ponies. Power will be sent to all four wheels through a 4Matic all-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic transmission in both models.

Topping the2021 Mercedes S-Classrange in US (at least until the new AMG variants arrive) will be the S580e plug-in hybrid, which uses a 362-hp version of the S500's inline-six and a 140-hp electric motor for a combined output of 502 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to a 28-kWh battery, the S580e will travel up to 60 miles in fully electric power - that's more than twice the range of the 2020 Mercedes S560e plug-in hybrid.
