Full-Size Electric SUV Fight: Cadillac Escalade IQ Vs. GMC Hummer SUV

Comparison /9 Comments

Which of GM's full-size electric SUVs is best?

General Motors is currently leading the full-size electric SUV charge with two models to choose from. While there are apparent differences between theCadillac Escalade IQand its older corporate cousin, theGMC Hummer EV SUV, they are more similar than you might think. Both use GM's Ultium technology, including a massive battery pack producing more than 200 kilowatt-hours of available energy.

To ensure there's little overlap between the two, the Hummer is more adventure-oriented, while Caddy went large with luxury in the all-electric 'Sclade. Compared to the IQ, the Hummer's high-tech interior looks humdrum, but more on that later.

For now, these are the only two options in this particular segment.

Exterior: Two Different Slices Of Americana

The Escalade and Hummer are both iconic American vehicles, and their electric versions naturally had to incorporate existing design cues to make these vehicles at least look familiar to highly skeptical audiences.

We'll start with the Hummer, which relies more heavily on the design inspired by the military vehicle adapted for civilians. The front has an updated version of the iconic grille but is updated for the EV era. It also has the obligatory LED light bar. Basically, it's a big box with massively flared wheel arches and cool features like an Infinity Roof with removable panels. The rear is also a modernized version of the old car, and the spare is neatly bolted to the trunk for easy access. Wheel options range from 18-22 inches, wrapped in 35-inch off-road rubber.

While the Hummer makes a statement, we can't help but think it's not a socially acceptable statement. The combustion-powered Hummer was a symbol of excess, and it ended up killing the car. The electric version is also excessive andnot particularly environmentally friendly, so it has the same image problem as its predecessors.

攀登智商是大胆而熟悉。球童的德西gners had a big problem to start with. It's known for having an oversized grille, which an electric vehicle doesn't need. Instead of simply blocking the grille off like many other automakers, Cadillac started with a blank piece of paper and created something we think is visually appealing as well as marque-identifying.

It's still unmistakably an Escalade from the side, but the roofline slopes a bit more, creating a sportier aesthetic. The IQ is more rounded than the boxy Hummer but still square enough to ensure everyone inside has space.

Cadillac retained the vertical LED lights from the ICE model, but the rear appears to have more lights than it needs. We like Cadillac's use of LED lighting technology to create a faux grille. It's an exciting way of keeping the grille in the family.

Somehow, the IQ also manages to make its 24-inch wheels look normal. These large units are also wrapped in 35-inch rubber.

Performance: Typical EV Straight-Line Speed

Cadillac gave the IQ the standard dual-motor setup, creating an eAWD system without a mechanical link between the front and rear axle. The Hummer uses the same approach, but the EV3X version has a tri-motor setup with two motors powering the rear wheels.

A Hummer with the standard dual-motor setup produces 625 horsepower and a claimed 7,400 lb-ft of torque. Adding a third motor bumps the power up to 830 hp and a claimed 11,500 lb-ft. The torque figures are much higher because the Hummer quotes wheel torque instead of motor torque to make its output seem more impressive.

The Escalade IQ slots in between the two Hummer models. It produces 680 hp and 615 lb-ft in Normal Mode, which increases to 750 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque when Velocity Max Mode is engaged.

Hummer says the EV3X can sprint to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, while Cadillac says its Escalade IQ can get there in less than five seconds.

Cadillac claims a tow rating of 8,000 pounds. The Hummer can only manage 7,500 lbs. Given how poorly electric vehicles typically perform when asked to tow something in the real world, we doubt owners will ever use their high-end SUVs for this purpose.

But output and performance figures are not the only EV-related number prospective owners have to worry about. Since both use such a large battery, what do the recharge times and range estimates look like?

The IQ and Hummer use the same high-voltage architecture that enables 800-volt DC fast charging, which they need to charge the 200-plus-kWh battery packs. Charging at 350 kW, the Hummer can charge from 20%-80% in 45 minutes. Roughly 100 miles of range is added every 10 minutes.

According to the EPA, the Hummer can go 314 miles between charges. Cadillac's projection is 450 miles for the IQ. If true, that shows you the power of advanced aerodynamics.

Interior: Cadillac Scores A Big Win

The Hummer EV is a big step up from previous models. It has a high-quality interior packed with high-end features like a 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch diagonal driver information center display. GM's Super Cruise is also standard on all trim levels. Generally, the ergonomics are spot on, and the touch surfaces the driver interacts with feel pleasant to touch.

There's nothing to complain about, but now that we've seen the inside of the Escalade IQ, we think GM could have done much more.

One of the benefits of riding on an EV skateboard is more interior design freedom. There's more room to play around without a large engine and all the mechanical pieces required to operate it.

The highlight of the IQ's interior is a pillar-to-pillar 55-inch total diagonal LED display powered by a next-gen Snapdragon Cockpit Platform.Google built-inis also standard, adding a host of cool features. Unlike the Hummer, it has a power-folding third row, and second-row luxury captain's chairs are optional. If you opt for the latter, you get stowable tray tables, a rear command center screen, dual wireless phone charging pads, and 12.6-inch personal screens for entertainment.

A 19-speaker sound system is standard on base models, while top-spec units ship standard with a 36-speaker AKG Studio Reference sound system. A 40-speaker AKG system with 360-degree immersive sound is also available.

You can choose between four interior themes, and a customizable ambient lighting system with 126 available colors adds even more flair.

Pricing And Verdict: Big Price Gap

Pricing of the Escalade IQ will only begin next summer at GM's Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center in Michigan. The pricing starts at $130,000, including destination charges. This price is likely for the entry-level model, and we expect top-tier models with a few options to be closer to $150,000. Oddly, it's not the most expensive Escalade available. That title belongs to the go-fasterEscalade-V.

The Hummer EV SUV starts at roughly $80,000 and increases to $100k for the tri-motor model. Add some options to the Escalade IQ, and it's a fullCT4-V Blackwingmore than a base Hummer.

Perhaps GM designed it this way so there wouldn't be any overlap between the two, but if we had to choose one, we'd go for the Escalade. The Hummer has that image problem, and while we respect what it can do off-road, we don't see customers using it that way due to the limited range and access to remote charging stations.

Electricity is particularly well-suited to luxury cars due to their silent nature and instant shove. The Escalade IQ is a luxury vehicle first and foremost, so that's why it gets our vote.
