Formerly known as the Tokyo Auto Show, the biennial motoring event has evolved into the Japan Mobility Show for 2023, and there is much to get excited about this year. This is the first edition of the event since 2019 after the Tokyo Auto Show was canceled in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, 475 enterprises will participate, far more than the 192 companies appearing in the final Tokyo Motor Show in 2019.

As expected, major Japanese automakers feature prominently at the event, and many are reviving the eastern nation'sreputation for building world-class sports cars.CarBuzzis attending this year's show, and we've rounded up all the reveals (so far) you need to know about.

Toyota

Toyota has one of the most extensive lineups at the Japan Mobility Show, highlighted by several electric concepts. The most recently revealed pair is theFT-Se sports car and FT-3e SUV, which seem well-positioned to morph into production models.

TheFT-Serepresents a new, fully electric chapter for the brand's high-performance GR division. It's the model that stands to benefit most from Toyota's next-generation lightweight battery technology. The car features a yoke-style steering wheel, blue Recaro seats, and a padded center console to protect your knees when throwing the FT-Se around on a track.

As for theFT-3e, its technical specifications are also unknown, but this one has an even greater focus on technology. The exterior uses digital displays to, for example, inform the driver of the battery charge before getting inside. It's more audaciously styled than thebZ4X, and the cabin boasts a blend of light-colored, natural-looking materials and digital screens wherever you look.

We also spotted a few reveals that were shown previously. These included theLand Cruiser Se concept(previewing the future electric Land Cruiser),EPU concept(a mid-size electric pickup), theKayoibako(a compact all-electric van), and theX-Van Gear(a rugged minivan). The X-Van has a highly flexible interior with multiple seating configurations, including the ability to swivel the front passenger seat to face the back. As cute as both vans are, it's theEPUthat truck-loving Americans will keep an eye on most closely, especially as smaller trucks make a comeback.

Outside of potential production cars, the event's name change to the Japan Mobility Show was made to underline new mobility solutions, not merely conventional cars. To that end, Toyota also showedseveral mobility concepts, including the Neo Steer (a new cockpit steering wheel concept), Space Mobility (a buggy designed for exploring the moon, believe it or not), JUU (an electric wheelchair), and Land Hopper (a three-wheeled electric personal mobility concept).

Lexus

Over at Lexus, two new concepts make an appearance. TheLF-ZC(Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst) has an emotive exterior design that can't easily be categorized, based on the brand's "Provocative Simplicity" design language. There are discernible visual links to production Lexus models, such as the preference for sharp angles over curves and the area where the Spindle Grille/Body rests, but theLF-ZCpushes the envelope in every way. The interior has a flat floor to boost spaciousness and incorporates a digital gauge cluster plus two small screens on either side of the steering wheel. Another screen is found ahead of the front passenger.

Based on Toyota's EV battery roadmap, the production LF-ZC will have a range of around 500 miles when it arrives in 2026, while the Lexus RZ's advanced steer-by-wire system that we got to experience earlier this year will also be used.

TheLF-ZL(Lexus Future Zero-emission Luxury) is a luxurious SUV that could become the brand's flagship. At almost 209 inches in length, its full-size proportions should provide stretch-out interior space. Like a Rolls-Royce, theLF-ZL concepthas rear-hinged doors, and the lounge-like second row offers exceptional legroom. As with the LF-ZC, the steer-by-wire system will be available, but it remains to be seen if the LF-ZL will get Toyota's future solid-state batteries that promise a range of up to 745 miles.

Honda

Rumors of aHonda Preludecomeback have been circulating for years, and while a fully electric model isn't what most JDM fans would've had in mind, at least Honda isn't giving up on sporty coupes. ThePrelude Concepthas a sexy, sleek look, but its interior and powertrain specs are unknown.

The Prologue and cute-as-a-button年代ustaina-Cwere previously revealed, and both appear at this year's show. The年代ustaina-C is a three-door hatchbackmade of acrylic resin that has been recycled and reused. TheCI-MEVandPocket Conceptwere revealed at the same time.

Nissan

Nissan is also set for a busy couple of days at the Japan Mobility Show. The latest car to be revealed in the Hyper range is theHyper Force concept, and it signifies the potential all-electric Nissan GT-R successor. The most telling sign of this is the pixel-blurred logo on theHyper Forcethat resembles the GT-R one. The coupe, which looks like it could be used as a Batmobile in some future installment of theBatmanmovie series, has a carbon-fiber body and solid-state batteries.

The Hyper Force's reveal was preceded by theHyper Punk,Hyper Tourer, andHyper Adventure. TheHyper Punkis an outrageous high-riding coupe crossover, while the Hyper Tourer is a minivan that looks sent from the future. The more rugged Hyper Adventure is the most off-road-focused of the bunch.

In December, Nissan will hit 90 years since its founding. For that reason, the Nissan booth will also feature 90th Anniversary variants of the Leaf, Kicks, and other models not sold in the USA. A GT-R Nismo Special Edition, Z Nismo, and Skyline Nismo have been shown previously, and all are present at the manufacturer's stand.

Mazda

Among the major Japanese brands, Mazda has a leaner lineup of reveals, but theIconic SP conceptis special enough to draw plenty of attention. A new compact sports car, the SP seems to take inspiration from the legendary rotary-powered RX-7. Finished in a magnificent color called Viola Red, theIconic SPis a stunner.

The concept is powered by a two-rotor rotary EV powertrain, including electric motors and a rotary engine that can run on alternative fuels like hydrogen. Combined, the system produces 365 horsepower, and at under 3,200 pounds, it's not as heavy as the current generation of EVs.

Elsewhere, the Mazda stand features multiple generations of the MX-5, including an MX-5 SeDV that can be controlled exclusively with the driver's hands.

年代ubaru

年代ubaru showcased the年代port Mobility conceptteased earlier this month. Think of it as an electric BRZ for the future, not that it looks anything like Subaru's compact sports car that you can buy right now. The cabin is much more conventional than the oddly rugged (for a sports car, anyway) exterior, with a steering wheel and dashboard that appear to be production-ready.

饰演与大多数其他概念强调,苏泊ru remained tight-lipped on technical specifications for the electric sports car, but one theory is that it's based on the e-TNGA platform and could use dual motors making over 300 hp, as in the Lexus RZ.

Mitsubishi

Of the smaller Japanese marques, Mitsubishi is one that actually has a presence in the USA, albeit with a somewhat uninspiring lineup. There's nothing uninspiring about theD:X concept, however: anelectric minivan with the ability to be taken off-roading. It features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, a massive glass house, and an amazing see-through hood that expands the driver's view. Previewing the next generation of the Delica, it'll be interesting to see how much of this wild concept is retained.

The Mitsubishi booth includes a new Triton prototype, Triton rally car, and Delica Mini.

年代uzuki

Although it has no current presence in the United States, Suzuki has a worldwide reputation for rugged dependability, so it's worth keeping an eye on this Japanese automaker. While small hatchbacks like the年代wift Conceptwon't garner much interest for Americans, the company'seVXconcept could. The electric crossover was pitched as its first global strategic EV when it was unveiled at Auto Expo 2023earlier this yearand will once again show its face in Tokyo, where its interior has been shown for the first time. A little larger than the Hyundai Kona Electric, the eVX's trendy interior features a widescreen display and an oddly shaped steering wheel that's closer to a rectangle than a circle.

Daihatsu

The cuteDaihatsu Vision Copenis a small roadster, and its enlarged size over the existing Copen makes it more of a Mazda MX-5 rival than before. The concept features a 1.3-liter engine that can run on carbon-neutral fuel, and power is directed to the rear wheels in traditional sports car style.

Besides theVision Copen, we also spent some time getting acquainted with the quirky me:MO, a modular EV that can change its shape and design as the customer's life stage changes. The UNIFORM Truck and UNIFORM Cargo are small commercial vehicles, while theminuscule Osanpois an electric drop-top.

Foreign automakers are scarce at this year's event, but BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and China's BYD have a small presence. BMW's booth includes previous reveals like the X2 and视觉Neue Klasse, while the Mercedes display will include the electric EQG.
