This car will spend most of its life carting the kids around and fetching groceries in the leafy suburbs, and will probably never see a dirt road in its life, but for those living in wet and cold conditions, the extra traction provided by the xDrive AWD system will be beneficial. The X1 xDrive28i is also quicker off the line thanks to its extra grip, with a zero to sixty time of 6.3 seconds, down from 6.6 seconds in the FWD variant. The AWD car is heavier on fuel, however, and the EPA rates that it will manage 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined, a definitive drop from the 24/33/27 figures on the sDrive28i. Still, with all the same tech and equipment, it’s really up to your needs and budget, whether the extra $2k is worth it.
